CVG put up an interesting preview for Cryptic's Star Trek Online, with some fresh information:

The regular cast of your space-faring adventure will be your Bridge Crew, heading up Science, Navigation and Security.

Emmert equates these guys to pets in other MMORPGs: they follow your instructions, but you don't control them directly. Like you, they level up in rank, but you're the one who spends their attribute points, and chooses their skills and equipment.

The rest of your ship is populated by General Crew: expendable red-shirts. These guys are more like a resource: different races confer different bonuses to your ship at large, depending on their natural talents.

You control your ship directly; space combat involves issuing nerdsome orders like "Security to deck 5! Hull breach on deck 6! Divert power to main shields!" Boarding actions are a part of combat, presumably once your shields are down.

Funny enough, they are featuring an older Perpetual Entertainment's screenshot, which has little to do with Cryptic's approach.

Cool. I actually didn't know anything about this game, and I came on here, and it looks great. And, the ability to use a classic "Divert power to the shields" is enough to make any game worth getting.

Want to play it....want to have Excaliber-class starship.....kill Romulans.

And finish the job Kirk started. I WILL make sure that sun goes nova and destroys Romulus.

I am surprised to say the least because I didn't know Star Trek was that popular. I thought Star Wars beat it.

General Rahm Kota: Vader thinks he's turned you. But I can sense your future. And Vader won't always be your master. I sense only... Me?

I think generally Star Wars has a greater number of people that will pay attention to it, but there is no set of fans with the devotion that Star Trek fans have.
